Workplace regulations put onus on employers to limit psychological risks on the job

5 December 2022

Dr Kirsten Way from UQ’s School of Psychology spoke to ABC Radio PM about new codes of practice coming into force across the country to regulate psychological hazards in the workplace.

Dr Way said the new regulations clarify what’s required of employers.

“There’s ways that workplaces can assess risk by measuring those things and then determining whether there is a real and not unduly speculative risk of harm from what people are doing at their workplace,” Dr Way said.

“The amount of time that people are off work for a psychological claim is almost five times greater than it is for physical workplace injuries.

"Not only are people away for a long period of time but it’s also a lot more costly than physical claims.”
