Odd One Out

23 September 2021

Professor Jolanda Jetten from UQ's School of Psychology featured on SBS Insight discussing what it's like to be the odd one out.

"The odd one out or the person who is different is basically challenging the norms of a group, the beliefs that are widely held within that group and that can sometimes be quite threatening for a group and a community,” Professor Jetten said.

"It can be quite threatening for groups if they feel that there is someone amongst them that doesn't subscribe to the norms that they have, or the beliefs that they feel are really important, so the black sheep can threaten the cohesion of the group.”
